New Technology May Restore Hair Loss

solutions-for-hair-loss-in-women-walnut-creek-caAccording to a news report it may now be possible to create hair growth in areas where hair follicles have stopped growing. Fox News reported the story and you can read the article here! This is great news for many people, both male and female, who suffer from severe hair loss.

Thinning hair is big concern for women where research suggests that hair and self-image are closely intertwined. Check out this WebMD slideshow. Even people with a full head of hair will have thinning as they grow older. There are many options available that will help with thinning hair.

The basics of good health not only aide our bodies but also our hair. Proper nutrition and regular exercise both help with maintaining cell renewal and circulation. However some hair loss will occur in spite of our best efforts to contain the situation.

As hair stylists we can aide in the coverage of hair loss through several methods. New styling techniques can make a difference as well as a different haircut. There are methods of applying extensions and even hair pieces that cover the front or crown. One system used at the Elizabeth Nicole Salon is the Evolving Hair System.

There are shampoos and conditioners that aide in the stimulation of hair follicles. The general philosophy with these products is that they will keep existing follicles in production mode rather that taking a permanent vacation. At the Elizabeth Nicole Salon we carry this type of product.

If you have concerns about thinning hair, be sure to address these concerns with your Hair Stylist.

Junior Prom and Senior Ball Resources

It’s that wonderful time of year when all of the high school juniors and seniors are making arrangements for their Junior Prom or Senior Ball. With so many things to think about it can be a daunting task. At the  Elizabeth Nicole Salon we thought it would be helpful to list some local resources for you along with links to their sites. While this is not an exhaustive list, it can be a good start. And, we’ve taken the time to read their Yelp! reviews to gain more insight on their quality of service.

First and foremost on the minds of most girls is finding the perfect dress. We spent some time checking out the reviews on Yelp! and the real winner here is:

This was the only dress shop with such a great rating.

Tuxedo Rentals are also an important consideration and these two were the best in the area:

  • Selix Formalwear, Pleasant Hill store has 6 Reviews, Five Star
  • Men’s Wearhouse, Walnut Creek store has 31 Reviews and only Two Star rating, they also have stores in Concord and San Ramon.

Limousine Services that cater to proms and balls and have a positive reputation and quality level of service:

Now, last but certainly not least, make sure you order your flowers. If you have a bit of ribbon or lace that matches your dress, you can even bring that to the florist ahead of time and incorporate it into your corsage or boutonniere.

Postcard-prom-ball-graduation-june2013Plan ahead for your hair, nails, makeup and maybe even tanning services. Appointments book up quickly, so it’s best to make them early on. If you have a special hair style, print pictures to bring with you to your appointment; sometimes your vision and the stylist’s vision of what you describe can be slightly different, but a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Review our boards on Pinterest for fresh ideas!

At the Elizabeth Nicole Salon we love to do Special Event styling and we have a promotion this year that includes FREE airbrushed makeup along with your styling service. We have package prices available if you decide to have a Beach Candy spray tan and hair styling and this still includes FREE airbrushed makeup!

How Do You Make A Top Bun?

Ballerina buns, towering top knots…call them what you will. These rounded hair buns have been an easy celebrity style to make all your own, and they are not difficult to create.

For an easy version simply pull your hair into a high ponytail with a non-damaging elastic. Twist the pony and wrap it around the base. Use a few carefully placed bobby pins to secure the knot and you are all set. For hair that is too slick to hold, separate your pony into three or four sections and do a little back combing to build some security. Smooth the outer edges and then wrap.

If you have finer hair, try picking up a little booster…I saw bun forms on sale at H&M in several hair colors and they were just a few dollars. Make the same pony, pull the tail through a booster and wrap your hair over the top of the rounded foam piece. Again, just secure the ends with bobby pins.

Buns have made a huge wave in the current fashion trends and they won’t be going away anytime soon. They have a formal appeal and really show off a great pair of earrings, and your hair won’t steal the thunder of an elaborate dress. Simple versions can be created to wear to the gym and you can be cool and stylish.

Give the bun a try!

How To Curl or Straighten Your Hair

By now many of you have seen the poor girl on YouTube who attempted to show a “how-to” video with her curling wand and burns her hair right off of her head. Without the proper technique it is really not too difficult to repeat this process, but fear not! With just a few rules to follow, you can have a beautiful style and you can style your hair with a curling iron, flat iron or a curling wand without causing any damage to your hair.

First, make sure that your device has heat settings that are adjustable. Better brands will have temperature markings, but you can work with thermal tools that have low, medium and high settings. The basic rule is that fine hair needs a lower setting and coarse hair can tolerate a higher setter, but if your coarse hair is damaged or colored, turn down the heat. Work with the lowest temperature you can that will still get the job done.

Hair must be dry! Never attempt to use your irons on wet or damp hair. Brush through your dry hair and apply a thermal protector. Most come in a spray and will easily mist through the hair. You may want to section your hair unto smaller work areas before you begin. It will be easier to do a thorough styling.

We are now ready to apply heat to the hair. As you work with each section of hair make sure that it is small enough to allow heat to go through the hair and don’t overlap your curls.  You want the heat to be applied quickly and evenly. Flat irons should start at the root and work evenly through to the ends and when wrapping curls around irons and wands start working the hair that is closer to the root and let the ends slide through last. It is very tempting to start wrapping a curl at the end of your hair and working up to the root, but the ends are the oldest and most worn part of your hair, so if you can apply heat to the ends last, they will benefit. You only need to heat the hair for A FEW SECONDS! Do not count to 20 like the poor girl in the video.

Don't start at the ends of your section, the heat stays to long on the oldest part of your hair!

Start in the middle and work your way to the ends of the section. Keep the ends nice.

Once you have heated each section or curl, let it cool before brushing through. When ironing with a flat iron this will be less of a concern, but when curling with irons or wands you can pin the  hot curl with a clip or bobby pin until the curl has cooled off, or just let it hang until it’s cool depending on how tight you want the style to be.

Brush curls or break them up lightly then give your hair a mist of hairspray to finish.

When deciding upon the right style for you it is best to look through photographs to see if there is something you would really like to wear. The Elizabeth Nicole Salon is constantly adding beautiful photos of hairstyles and color to our Pinterest page so you may easily find something you like on our Special Occasion Hairstyles or there are examples of sleeker up-do’s in our Chignons and French Twists board. We also have boards for Bridal Style and Beautiful Braids. Take the time to look at these styles and others that you may find in magazines or on the internet.
